East Extramural Area: June 26, 2007

We reached sterile soil in the western unit of the trench. The pit of ash is associated with a flat, blackened stone set vertically into the ground, which may have been part of a larger feature that formed a firebox, or communal cooking space that was cut into the original plaza surface. We mapped the profiles of the unit and closed it out. We set up a new unit perpendicular to the trench, running north- south in order to follow the new wall. This unit is yielding a lot of wall fall throughout. We added another 1 X 2 meter unit to the eastern end of the trench. This half of the trench is yielding very few artifacts.
